Taking Wordpress beyond a blogging platform

wordpress logo

If you think Wordpress is just a blogging platform then you’d be truly missing its full potential as its capable of so much more. I’ve started to use Wordpress as a full blown content management system for my clients as it offers all the power and flexibility I need. It never ceases to amaze me how well supported it is in the community and I have come across some superb plugins and premium themes recently.

Wordpress Help

The WordPress Help Sheet is a simple cheatsheet in PDF format that provides easy reference for basic template files and PHP snippets.
How to setup Wordpress locally on Windows - A short guide to setting on WAMP for local testing of Wordpress websites and blogs.
Wordpress Wallpaper - Ok so its not really related but every Wordpress geek out there will love this (and that includes me!).

Wordpress Themes

Wordpress CSS Gallery Theme - From WP Designer. CSS Galleries are all the rage these days but there’s nothing saying you have to stick to the CSS niche. Just use your imagination!

Portfolio Press - Very nice premium theme that’s ideal for web and graphic designers wanting to showcase their work.

Cornerstone - An excellent premium theme that would suit those webmasters looking for a theme that would suit an authority site or blog.

Wordpress Plugins

Wordpress Miniposts - is a nice little plugin which adds a check box to each post or page you add in Wordpress and once checked turns it into a small post that lives outside the normal hierarchy of postings. This is an ideal plugin for quick blurbs that you can add to a sidebar or column of your website.

WP e-Commerce - This is one of the most impressive plugins I’ve seen for a while and provides a powerful interface for Wordpress which has some excellent features including an AJAX shopping cart, search engine friendly url’s and support for PayPal IPN.

Wordpress is most definitely a great CMS, but there is a lot of intensive knowledge that must be known in order to hide the fact that it is wordpress.

But the main reason why Wordpress is so good in my opinion, is the intensive amounts of information available. If you want to learn how to do something with wordpress, it is easy to find out how, and it usually isn’t very difficult!

I couldn’t agree more. There are plenty of good open source content management solutions out there (Moveable Type, TypePad, Drupal etc) but Wordpress beats them hands down with the sheer amount of community support. I’ve always felt comfortable modifying Wordpress in the knowledge that there will either be a well written plugin available or the necessary support in the forums.
